"WOODNOTES" COLUMN GUIDELINES FOR SNOWY EGRET

"Woodnotes" was conceived as a way in which we might present to our readers certain short pieces--rarely more than four manuscript pages, sometimes less than one--that we like very much but that we fear might not stand alone in comparison with longer, more polished articles, essays, or stories. "Woodnotes" pieces all have something in common: personal observation. They reflect a primal experience of nature that asks to be shared for its own sake, not necessarily for any philosophical significance. There is generally little commentary, with readers being left to draw their own conclusions. The experience is usually a specific contact with one of nature's creatures, but other varieties of relationship to nature are certainly possible.
